RAISONANCE ANNOUNCES IMMEDIATE AVAILABILITY OF DEVELOPMENT TOOLS FOR PHILIPS' 8051MX ARCHITECTURE
|
Crolles, France < January 15, 2002
Raisonance announces immediate availability of an integrated toolchain for the 8051 Memory eXtended (MX) architecture from Philips.
RCMX, MAMX, RLMX and SIMICE MX, respectively ANSI C Compiler, Macro Assembler, Linker and Simulator for the MX architecture work seamlessly under Raisonance Integrated Development Environment (RIDE) and are compatible with Raisonance's existing 8051 and XA toolchains, thus confirming Raisonance's position as the most complete tool provider for Philips targets.
Philips 8051MX architecture has been designed to allow easy development of applications >64kb while preserving binary compatibility with existing 8051 code and allowing efficient programming in the C language. RCMX takes full advantage of all these new features by offering a choice of different memory models for code memory, data memory and stack size, all supported in all possible combinations of assembly<written libraries.
Although derived from, and strictly compatible with, RC51, RCMX has been developed from the ground up to support the new features of the MX such as Linear Addressing Mode and 16 bits stack. This allows for the development of large applications without incorporating the complex details such as code banking and location of different modules.
Generic pointers are managed through the hardware registers PR0 and PR1, thus eliminating the need to include library functions for these operations.
The whole toolchain completely supports all new MX memory spaces (HDATA and EDATA) as well as the Far and Near qualifiers for Functions and Code and the management of Universal Pointers.
Luca Ubiali, marketing manager of Raisonance said: "We have developed the MX toolchain with the end user in mind. We didn't want to just adapt our 8051 toolchain to make it able to generate more than 64kb of code, we have taken the problem at the core and we now have a toolchain that is really specific for the MX. We are proud to provide the most comprehensive support for Philips micros and we will continue in this direction."
Availability
MX tools from Raisonance are available immediately as part of existing Raisonance Tool Suites for 8051 (RkitP51 < Professional Version and RkitE51 < Enterprise version) at no extra cost. Customers under a valid Maintenance Contract as of January 2002 will receive the new tools for free with the next upgrade.
A fully working demo version (limited to 4kb of generated code) is available at www.raisonance.com for free download.

RAISONANCE ANNOUNCES NEW POST LINKER OPTIMIZER FOR 80C51 MICROCONTROLLER ARCHITECTURE
CodeCompressor®, the first Post<Linker optimizing tool for 8051, allows
to achieve the best code compactness by optimizing the whole application
as if it was a single module.
|
Crolles, France < November 21, 2000.
Raisonance showed today for the first time at
Electronica CodeCompressor®, its new optimization tool initially available for 8051
targets. Unlike other 8051 toolchains CodeCompressor® takes a new and unique approach
to optimizing applications written for microcontrollers: by acting after the linker,
CodeCompressor® optimizes the whole application, including C, assembler and libraries,
therefore saving an extra 10% to 20% (typical) on the overall code size. Traditionally,
optimizing compilers limit their action to one module, but whatever gain is obtained in
this way becomes less important when linking the whole program with the libraries:
CodeCompressor® works instead on the overall program, exactly the one that will be burn
in Eprom or Flash, and can allow to chose a smaller memory or to fit in extra features
that can add value to a design.
CodeCompressor® achieves its best performance and easiness of use when used into
Raisonance Integrated Development Environment, but can be used to compress third
party<generated 8051 programs as well, including binary files; in this case a specially
developed user interface helps the user to enter information that CodeCompressor couldn't
get from the Compiler/Assembler/Linker and that are vital for it to work safely and
efficiently.
According to Francis Lamotte, CEO of Raisonance, "Raisonance has spent the last 10 years
to optimize more and more its 8051 C compiler and toolchain; today it is between the best
in its class and it had become really hard to gain 1 % more by acting on the compiler alone.
A radically new approach was needed: the fact of running one or more optimization passes
after the linker had been on the back of my mind for quite along time, but it's something
that was very hard to do without a complete and detailed knowledge of the 'overall'
toolchain, including simulator and IDE. Today our tools have reached a level of
integration and reliability that allows us to implement this new technology in a way that
is both safe and easy to use"
Luca Ubiali, Marketing Manager agrees, "The competition is very stiff in the 8051
marketplace: it was no more enough to say that our compiler was one of the best, we wanted
to do something that really put us apart. With CodeCompressor® we are going to have a
definite edge over the competition"
CodeCompressor® acts in three phases that can be individually enabled and disabled by the
user to have the best control over the program: the first pass consist in inlining functions
that are called only once in the application, including library functions. The second pass
is code factorization: CodeCompressor will look everywhere in the code for similar blocks
of assembler instructions and will create a subroutine with the proper calls whenever this
is safe and convenient. The Third Pass is 'local optimization': the code rearranged by
inlining and factorization exposes new opportunities for traditional local optimizations,
such as peephole, constant folding and absolute/relative jumps replacement.
One of the most important problems to be solved in order to make CodeCompressor easily
usable by any programmer with no specific knowledge of the target architecture, was to
preserve debug information. Because CodeCompressor can modify the assembler code quite
heavily, it is important that the programmer still has the impression of modifying
something he/she has written, and not some form of highly optimized, but incomprehensible
code. This required to extend the debug information and to create a new format, that we
called OMF51+. The user can either choose this format to work with CodeCompressor or keep
the old format for compatibility issues. In the first case, the compiler and assembler
have been extended too, and now provide information on Data and Code sections, to tell
CodeCompressor where it can optimize and where it can not.
Availability and Pricing
CodeCompressor® is currently in beta test and is schedules to be available in January 2001.
It will be commercialized as a part of Raisonance's high<end Enterprise Suites, starting
with RkitE51. A technical article describing in detail CodeCompressor features and
performance is available now at www.raisonance.com.
Temporary evaluation versions will be available on a customer per customer base starting
in December: please send you request for evaluation at support@raisonance.com
RkitE51 is priced at Euro 2500 and is available from Raisonance and World Wide
distributors or for online sale at www.raisonance.com.

Philips
Semiconductors and Raisonance Announce Integrated Development
System to Support 8<bit 80C51 and 16<bit XA Microcontroller Architectures
(26/06/2000)
RIDE<51XA, First Combined XA and C51 C<Compiler
Tool Chain Simplifies 8<bit to 16<bit Design Migration
|
| Philips Semiconductors,
an affiliate of Royal Philips Electronics, today announced the availability
of the first integrated development tool chain. The tool chain is
complete with a fully<functional C<Compiler, assembler, simulator
and debugger that supports both 8<bit 80C51 and 16<bit XA microcontroller
architectures from Philips Semiconductors. The unique compatibility
of the tool chain eliminates the manual work involved in porting
codes between compilers that use different C<syntax, enabling customers
to port existing 80C51 codes to the XA using one tool and a minimum
of code rewrite.
"The features of the XA architecture make it an easy 16<bit
upgrade for 80C51 users," said Geoff Lees, marketing director,
Microcontroller Business Line, Philips Semiconductors. "The
combined tool chain from Raisonance further simplifies the upgrade,
now that the customer can develop codes using one development
environment where the C<syntax for both compilers is exactly the
same. We are very satisfied with the performance of the tool set,
and are convinced our microcontroller customers will find very
good price/performance in the RIDE<51XA."
"We are very excited to work with Philips Semiconductors
and be a part of the XA success story," said Francis Lamotte,
president, Raisonance. "Unlike other XA C<compilers, RIDE<51XA
is syntax<compatible with market leading 80C51 compilers. This
means that 75 to 80 percent of today's 80C51 customers can port
their existing code base to the XA with a minimum of rework. Whether
customers require the inherent ease<of<use of the C51 architecture,
or the XA's fast context switching and multitasking capabilities<the
Raisonance C<compiler is an ideal solution."
The C<compiler is ANSI compliant, containing all standard ANSI
C libraries. It features tiny, small, compact, large and huge
memory models. All C<base types are supported, including IEEE754
floating point arithmetic. The tool chain also includes a Macro
Assembler supporting all standard C51 assembly syntaxes. A Linker/Relocator,
expanded by new concepts such as segment grouping, permits better
CPU control and efficient mapping of user memory. It also generates
symbolic output format (OMF<51), HEX output file, and a complete
listing file.
A Simulator/Debugger, integrated into the development environment,
uses information generated by the compiler or assembler to provide
fully symbolic high level debugging, and considers characteristics
of the selected device and simulates in detail all internal peripherals.
Advanced versions also permit the simulation of multi<process
applications, offering various solutions to simulate external
inputs and outputs and provide emulator<like functions such as
trace management or complex breakpoint control.
|
A real<time operating system (RTOS) for time and memory management,
semaphores, synchronizing events, inter<task communications, and
sophisticated functions such as a perpetual calendar are also
included. The RTOS performs task declaration at the C<source level
and kernel configuration at project level.
Customers can download a free, 100 percent functional evaluation
version of the RIDE<51XA, which supports 4 kB of code for the
80C51 and 8 kB of code for the XA. This free version can be downloaded
from www.51xa<tools.com
and customers who want to purchase an upgrade can do so from the
secure site.
