Since 1999 and the introduction of RIDE as a replacement for the
older WEdit-32, Raisonance has introduced a protection against illegal copying
of its Software Products. Raisonance currently offers to its
Customers the choice of Hardware Protection
(dongle) or Software Protection (serialization).
Both solutions have advantages and drawbacks as discussed
below and are offered for the same price (one OR the other,
to be chosen when you order your product). Raisonance
encourages Customers to choose the software protection: it is
fully automatic for internet-enabled PCs, there is nothing to ship and
there is no dongle that can easily be lost or broken.
Software Protection or Software Key (serialization)
When you buy a product with a Software Key, you get a CD with
a sticker where the "serial number" is reported. When you
install the software your PC will give you a "serialization
code" which is independent from the serial number but that
will depend on the PC and on other parameters that vary
from one installation to another (ie, installing from the
same CD on different PCs or on the same PC but at a different
times will give you different "serialization codes"). With both
the "serial number" + "serialization code" you can log on to
Raisonance's website and you can get an "activation code" which
will unlock the full functionality of the software you have
already installed. The whole process is automatic, so that if
you buy your compiler in the middle of the night paying by
credit card (in this case the "serial number" will appear on
the screen just after your payment has been validated) you
can start working the same night, without waiting for any
human intervention at Raisonance or any of its distributors.
Since Build Number 7.04 (around October 2000), RIDE includes
a new "Activation Code Wizard" facility that, if your computer
is connected to the internet, it will automatically connect to
the Raisonance website and get an activation code for you.
The Software Key has the following drawbacks:
1) If your PC crashes and you need to reinstall, the system
(the computer managing Raisonance.com) will tell you that it
has already provided you with an "activation code" for your "serial
number" and will refuse to issue another one.
Raisonance offers its customers the possibility to avoid this
kind of problem: the system is programmed to provide up to
two "activation codes" for the same serial number. The idea
is that the user whose PC has just crashed can immediately get
another "activation code" and restart working, in the meantime you should
inform Raisonance of this problem as soon as possible via email
in such a way that Raisonance can reprogram the system to
enable yet another "activation code" for that "serial number"
in case of further crashes.
2) You can run the Software on one PC only:
- if you need to run it on several PCs (like an engineering
group sharing the sw) we suggest the use of the
"Hardware Key" (dongle) - see below
- if you have a desktop PC and a mobile PC and you want
to be able to use the sw on both you can just inform
Raisonance of your situation by email and we will provide a
second "activation code" at no extra cost.
Hardware Key
The "Hardware Key" is a dongle that unlocks the full
functionality of the Raisonance product you have bought
simply connecting it to the parallel port of your PC. This
allows the same sw to be shared by several users while making
sure that no more than one user at a time can use it. The
disadvantage of the Hardware Key is that it can be easily lost or
broken: that's why Raisonance encourages Customers to choose the
Software Key.
