KEOLABS Launches STM32 Chrom-ART™ Design Contest in Cooperation with STMicroelectronics

Worldwide competition to stimulate creative use of graphics in microcontroller applications

Montbonnot, France - November 4, 2013   KEOLABS today launched the STM32 Chrom-ART™ Application Design Contest – an open competition for application designers using the STM32F429 microcontroller, Chrom-ART Graphics Accelerator™ and the EvoPrimer development platform. Created in cooperation with STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, the contest promotes innovative uses of graphics and displays in microcontroller applications among engineers, students and electronics hobbyists worldwide.

Contest participants will implement their designs using the latest microcontroller in the STM32 family – the STM32F429 with ARM Cortex-M4 core. It offers a 2-Dimensional Direct Memory Access (DMA2D) peripheral for managing and displaying graphics on TFT LCD screens. Known as the Chrom-ART Accelerator™, the peripheral is supported by on-chip drivers for external memory, displays and cameras and provides unprecedented graphics-handling capabilities to enhance user interfaces in microcontroller applications. “In our industry-leading STM32 microcontroller family, ST provides the integrated features that enable innovation in microcontroller applications,” said Laurent Desseignes, Microcontroller Ecosystem Marketing manager. “The STM32 Chrom-ART™ Design Contest is a catalyst for creative applications and sharing of know-how within the microcontroller community.”

Contest participants will implement applications on the STM32F429 EvoPrimer development platform. The tool includes a color TFT touchscreen and a complete compiling and debugging tool set. It eases application creation by providing sample software and an application programming interface for the Chrom-ART Accelerator™. The platform allows users to rapidly enhance their applications’ graphical interfaces with handling of multiple graphic objects, transparency, layering, movement and animation with very simple code and without detracting from processor performance.

The contest runs worldwide until February, 15 2014 and offers total prizes in excess of $10 000 USD to the six most successful designs. The designs will be evaluated on their originality, functionality and quality. The most promising contest entries will be presented at the 2014 Embedded World exhibition in Nuremberg Germany, where visitors will have the opportunity try the applications and vote for their favorite.
